Distance education makes particular demands on both foreign language teachers and their students, and special attention to pedagogical, technical, and administrative considerations is essential if distance education courses are to succeed in taking full advantage of the media available to them. The following 1997 NFLRC Summer Institute programs will provide tools and techniques for teaching a foreign language via distance education:
TOOLS & TECHNIQUES FOR INTERACTIVE TELEVISION-BASED INSTRUCTION
JULY 7-18
This workshop will include:
general training in the effective integration of sound pedagogical principles and technical know-how in the interactive television classroom
an experience as an ITV student in a mini language course
critical observation of a summer semester interisland Chinese language course taught daily over Hawaii Interactive Television System
multimedia computer lab sessions for planning and preparation of model language teaching units
delivery of prepared units over ITV to fellow participants
a videoconference on foreign language instruction with selected Mainland
sites
